Discovering Europe by train

Comfortable seats, a generous luggage allowance and relaxing views, travelling by train is one of the easiest ways to explore the continent, and it’s a great way for families and friends to travel together. Europe benefits from an extensive network of long distance train services, includingDB Fernverkehr andÖBB. WhileÖBB Nightjet trains, enable travellers to cover long distances overnight saving both time and money. Trains are regularly cleaned and disinfected, and social distancing from other passengers is widely encouraged. There are also options to book a private compartment on ÖBB Nightjet trains so family or friends can travel safely together.

COVID-19 safety procedures

A collaboration between the European Union Agency for Railways (ERA), the European Commission, National Safety Authorities, railway sector representatives, and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) have developed a COVID-19 railway protocol to ensure safety is adhered to across all networks in Europe.

Passengers are advised to pre-book rail tickets in order to avoid crowds when arriving at the station. Where possible, try to travel off-peak to avoid over-crowding in stations and carriages. Face coverings are either mandatory or recommended on most European rail networks, along with adhering to social distancing measures, regular hand washing and/or use of hand sanitisers whilst in the station and on the train.
